Accumulated traumas/scars is the cause of symptoms for millions of chronic pain sufferers. We all accumulate scars throughout our lives and they impact our bodies in many negative ways. C-sections and abdominal scars may be a hidden cause for millions of women suffering from Chronic Post-Surgical Pain (CPSP), back pain, shoulder pain and neuropathic pain.
Problems associated with scars are not only physical, but emotional. A sense of loss, anger, violation, humiliation and helplessness has been reported associated with C-sections. Depression and PTSD symptoms have been reported by women who have received C-section procedures.
How Scars Negatively Influence Your Body.
- Upregulates the Sympathetic Nervous System producing stress, decreasing Heart rate Variability (HRV)- Creates internal adhesions inside the body. Adhesions acts as internal strait jackets, reducing muscle/organ performance and produce pain.- Injures fascia causing restrictions and structural imbalancesSuppresses female hormone levels- Blocks blood circulation & energetic flows through the meridian system, causing energy and circulation stagnation in extremities - Causes chronic pain throughout the body.
Releasing scars which "cut" or "severe" meridians and nerve pathways can often be the single most important factor in the treatment of chronic pain & many women's health issues. In many cases, patients usually see immediate improvement in range of motion as well as a quick reduction in pain that are long lasting. This technique is especially effective in treating scars and adhesions deep inside the body.
My approach to Pain & Scar Release Therapy involves a combination of therapies in a session: Microcurrent Point Stimulation (MPS), Cold Laser Therapy, Sonicwave Therapy and various manual techniques.  It is a quick and highly effective treatment for pain associated with post-operative surgery, myofascial tightness due to scar tissue and adhesions.
You will see immediate visible changes in the appearance and pliability of the scar and gradually will notice a reduction in the tightness throughout your entire body. When a scar has been released there is no longer a restriction in the flow of energy, blood circulation and lymph drainage. The body can then complete the healing process.
Scar Tissue release has a very fine side effect - it  is also cosmetically enhancing. "Bumps", "ridges" and "valleys" of even very old scars are evened out so that the appearance of scarring is greatly reduced, often with only a very fine line remaining. Consider trying some sessions before undergoing further surgery to "correct" scar tissue appearance which can sometimes result in even more scar tissue!

Scars can form Adhesions

  • Adhesions are internal scars that effect muscles, nerves, organs and fascia

  • Twist or pull together

  • Imbalance Organs

  • Become immobile

  • Displace joints

  • Cause pain and poor posture

Benefits of Scar Release Therapy

  • Reduces chronic pain

  • Flushes toxins

  • Promotes circulation and energy Inhance lymph flow

  • Treats emotional blockage

  • Improves ROM and releases fascia

  • Reactivates normal cellular activity

How long is a session?

 A session is 1 hour.

How often are sessions recommended?

Most patients require 3-5 treatments for lasting outcomes, however number of sessions also depends on the amount of scar tissue a person has.

Who may not be able to receive electrotherapy devices used in session?

This session includes use of various electrotherapy devices used during session which may be contraindicated for individuals with the following concerns. Please ensure you DO NOT have any of these conditions or check with us and your doctor first if you do.

  • Pregnancy (not enough research)

  • Implanted electronic device (pacemakers, hearing aids, etc.) Hearing aids must be removed prior to therapy

  • Epilepsy

  • Cardiac arrhythmias

  • Facial Implants

  • Open wounds/eczema in the facial region

What should I expect to see or feel during/after the session?

Specific therapies/protocols of Scar Release Therapy are used to help treat both external and internal adhesions. The process is extremely gentle and involves releasing the fascia where appropriate. A more or less intense prickling may be felt where scar tissue is releasing. There is usually significant difference both in the feeling around the scarring and in its appearance after the first session.

What are outcomes for clinical studies using MPS Therapy for scars?

Published research proves MPS Scar release therapy can provide significant pain relief in the 1st session. After a single scar release application, MPS improved pain outcomes 73% on severely chronic pain 51 patients, who suffered an average 7.61 years with an average intensity of 6.33/10.

What people are saying.

43 yrs of Chronic Neck/Back Pain Gone - 1 Session A 72 year old massage therapist reported that she had constant chronic pain in her low back, rated an 8 out of 10. A seemingly unrelated abdominal scar was treated with Scar Release Therapy. After about 10 minutes, she stood up, walked around, and let her body begin to re-adjust. She shockingly and joyfully reported zero pain! Her face was glowing and she could not believe she had lived with years of pain, after many different therapeutic treatments with no lasting relief, to have scar treatment release the pain in minutes! She had another scar caused by fusion of Cervical Vertebrae 5-6. She reported her daily neck pain to be at a 9 out of 10. She had lived with neck pain for 43 years! The scar on her neck was also treated and went to a zero!  4 Stomach Surgeries - Scar Reduced - Shoulder Pain GoneI’ve had 4 major surgeries on my stomach. My stomach had a lot of scar tissue which has caused me some major problems. My scars was also very pronounced and very pink in color. After only a few sessions, my scars totally changed color and became not so pronounced. Now, my stomach is not so tight from all the scar tissue. As well I was experiencing shoulder pain that has disappeared from working on the scars on my stomach. It's absolutely amazing!- Donald

2 Scars - Reduced Drugs & Pain MedsI have two significant scars: baclofen pump implantation on my abdomen and spinal fusion surgery that runs from my upper back to my tail bone. Both scars were very tight and pronounced and movement around my torso/abdominal area was very restricted. After several sessions of scar release therapy, the scar is much flatter and pliable. My range of movement in my torso and abdomen is greatly improved. The spinal fusion scar is far less tender and prominent. Also my use of anti-inflammatory drugs and pain medicines has significantly decreased. - Shelby3 C-sections Later - Pain & Scar Almost Gone I had 3 C-sections, so my abdominal scar was quite noticeable. In addition, there was one spot on the scar that frequently caused me discomfort. I also had intermittent shoulder pain. After one scar treatment, the scar is almost invisible and I have no more pain at the scar site or in my shoulder. That is truly amazing!- Michelle 80 yr old - No Walker Needed after 1 SessionOne 80 year old family friend for the 1st time in 3 years was able to walk without her walker after just one treatment. I treated her scars from bilateral knee and hip replacement and her lower back. I discovered a scar on her low back that she did not know she had - she then remembered having an abscess drained from the spot when she was about 5 years old. I treated that spot thoroughly. She said her decreased in upper leg pain and increase in mobility was a miracle.- Victoria, MPS TherapistMPS Scar Release Therapy helps injured soldiersWithout the ability to rapidly release the numerous scars of our injured soldiers, many cases of PTSD or chronic pain would have dragged on or failed completely. - Tonya, MPS Therapist

Can Bowen Therapy help Asthma & Allergies?

What happens in an Asthma Attack?

Asthma has become a common condition. Almost everyone knows someone who is suffering from this debilitating condition. Some develop it from childhood and then grow out of it by adulthood whereas others develop it as adults.

Certain things can trigger the sensitive airways in asthmatics to ‘flare-up’, causing the muscles around the airways to contract making the airways swell and become narrow, making it harder to breathe.

Key organs involved in an asthma attack are not just the lungs but also the diaphragm. Normally the diaphragm contracts when breathing in and then relaxes to allow expiration. However, with asthma, the diaphragm goes into spasm and may

be at a level of constant contraction. This allows the asthmatic to breathe in but becomes increasingly difficult to breathe out.

What Causes Asthma Attacks?

Asthma can be caused by various factors like;

  • Pollution

  • Allergies (pet, food, dust, chemicals)

  • Food intolerances

  • Infections

  • It can also be hereditary

Asthma attacks build-up starting from an initial difficulty breathing, dry cough, tightness and pain in the chest, cough during the night, difficulty breathing and wheezing. The heart rate increases as the body struggles to breathe. The cough can cause capillaries in the face to get damaged which can be seen.

How Bowen Therapy Can Help Asthma

Bowen Therapy is a natural and gentle way to manage Asthma. The Bowen moves act directly through (the nerves in the fascia onto) the nervous system by relaxing and soothing it, which in turn relaxes and releases the tension in the diaphragm allowing the asthmatic to exhale and therefore breathe easier.

Over time this:

  • Improves breathing

  • Reduces the number of attacks and their severity

  • Reduces the sensitivity to the triggers

  • Helps them respond better to the medication when needed

  • Reduces the need for medication

  • Improve overall health

I like to teach my clients how to perform a small Bowen emergency move they can do themselves when they feel a tightness beginning to build so they manage the condition themselves. This move is also excellent for hiccups or coughing, even anxiety or panic attacks to help relieve and tight chest and normalize breathing.

Research Study on efficacy of Bowen Therapy in managing Asthma

A National Research program (between October 2002 to March 2004) was launched to determine the efficacy of The Bowen Therapy in the treatment of the Asthma condition. The research was carried out over a twelve month period. The research was aimed at recording any changes in the Volunteer’s symptoms in terms of frequency, severity of attacks and reliance on medication.

The majority of 24 volunteers had been suffering from Asthma over 5 years, most for over 15 years.  The results were very positive.

  • 83% reported a reduction in the frequency of their asthma attacks

  • 75% reported a reduction in the severity of their attacks

  • 75% reported using less medication than before the Bowen Research project.

Of the 24 volunteers who completed the program, 22 reported that secondary health concerns had also improved, including back, neck and shoulder problems; knee and joint problems; headaches and migraines; hay fever; irritable bowel syndrome and digestion; circulation; insomnia; anxiety, stress, depression and energy level improvement.

The outcomes of the study are highly encouraging, as indicated by the unanimous recommendation from every Volunteer to suggest the Bowen Therapy to other individuals with Asthma. Unlike treating a particular ailment in isolation, Bowen Therapy influences the individual’s integrated biodynamic system. Since Asthma can be triggered by a multitude of factors such as emotional distress, stress levels, exercise, food, and environmental allergens, it is crucial to consider a holistic therapy like Bowen as a viable alternative for enhancing the well-being of Asthma patients.

Bowen Therapy Clients with Asthma

Girl, 2 years old, 4 Bowen Therapy treatment. At her first treatment she was very wheezy and had been prescribed steroids, which her mother was reluctant to use. Both parents smoke. The wheezing reduced after the first treatment and has now disappeared, though there was a period of mucus being produced. Her breathing has improved after 4 treatments, so much so that the school have commented on it. The steroids were discontinued before the first treatment. It is very difficult to treat a two-year-old child who is sitting and squirming on her mother's knees. However, it seemed to work well despite those difficulties. Normally, the child has had asthma attacks every two weeks or so during the winter. She has had none for over two months now. Her mother wrote: "My 2.5 year old daughter has suffered from asthma and also an over-production of mucus from birth. She has Ventolin and also Becotide on occasions. In November 1999, her asthma worsened and the GP advised restarting steroids at a higher dose. She took a severe reaction to steroids so we stopped them immediately. That week she received her first Bowen and has had treatment once or twice a month since. She has not needed any medication since; she has a very slight period of wheezing occasionally which is managed with essential oils. It has been a remarkable improvement, particularly as she is a lively two year old who doesn't always stay still for the treatments." Signed BC - Feb 2000

Boy, 6 years old, 1 Bowen Therapy treatment.  Jacobs' asthma was worsening and his mother did not tell him that his visit to a Bowen therapist was connected to his breathing problems. As he is normally quite a stubborn little boy and wary of anything new, his mother was surprised when he accepted the treatment and did as he was told. The next evening, when she reminded him to take his usual dose from his inhaler, he announced: "I don't need my puffer any more". He then enjoyed a summer free of asthma, including hour-long football practices with his brother, and a mountain-biking holiday.

Girl, 8 years old, 3 Bowen Therapy treatments. Suffers with asthma and chest infections. She was small for her age and had a poor appetite. She had 3 inhalers: 5 puffs of one twice a day; 3 of another twice a day and the last one every 4 hours. Distressed with the amount of medication Fiona was taking, her mother was looking for an alternative and discovered The Bowen Therapy. After one treatment, Fiona became full of life, energetic, hungry and didn't need the last 4 hourly inhaler. At the end of treatment 3, she was off all inhalers, had grown, was still full of life and hungry. At a routine check-up with the GP, just after Bowen treatment 3, he immediately picked up the difference. The bright, alert look in her eyes, weight and height gain, clear, good, strong breathing. He was so pleased he wanted Bowen information to give to other patients.

Boy (teenager), 2 Bowen Therapy treatments.  A teenager, Kirk had had asthma, a constant backache and severe 'morning motivational' problems for years. He often had problems getting to sleep, but after a 6.30 p.m. treatment he fell sound asleep till next morning. After two sessions he complained of little result, but carried on. After the third treatment, he drank a lot of water and has not looked back. His backache and asthma are gone and, amazingly, for the first time in his life he is experiencing a sustained motivation to get up and going in the mornings

Girl, 17 years old, 1 Bowen Emergency treatment. Junior Basketball Team Member, Katey, was involved with the multistage fitness test used to analyze an athlete's aerobic performance. A standard is expected at this level and the peer pressure to achieve the necessary grade is immense. Katey was struggling for breath soon into the test causing some concern early on. Determination kept her going until she had to stop because she could not gain a breath at all and had commenced a panic attack, which complicated the situation. Katey was removed from the concerned crowd and the Bowen emergency asthma move carried out. Immediately a normal breathing pattern resumed and after 30 minutes Katey carried on training with no further symptoms.
